Prince Rupert & Area Tourism Information

Welcome...

to the City of Prince Rupert. Prince Rupert is a friendly, small town with all the amenities of a large city. Surrounded by lush, green forests, rocky mountains, and blue Pacific Ocean, Prince Rupert is situated on Kaien Island just thirty miles south of the Alaska border. Kaien Island is a small, mountainous island that is a stones throw from mainland B.C., and is connected by a small bridge at the end of Yellowhead Highway16.

The name "Kaien"...

is the local First Nations, the Tsimshian people’s word for sea foam. Kaien Island’s close proximity to the mainland creates extremely turbulent tidal rapids that create the “sea foam” that Kaien Island is named for. Prince Rupert lies geographically between two major river systems, the Nass River to the north, and the famed Skeena River to the south. Both of these legendary rivers are the life blood of Chatham Sound. Both rivers boast huge runs of all five Pacific Salmon, and play key roles in supporting all the wildlife of the region.

Prince Rupert...

is rich in history. The Tsimshian people have inhabited the coastal region for thousands of years, surviving off of all the bounties the ocean had to offer. Prince Rupert has always played a key role in B.C.’s Commercial Fishing Industry. Fisherman from up and down the coast would make their way to Prince Rupert to cash in on the huge salmon runs, and great halibut stocks, as well as other sea food harvests. Although not as big an industry any more, there is still a good size commercial fishing fleet based out of Prince Rupert. A stroll down the public dock is always an interesting one, as every type of boat, from small skiffs, to yachts, and every type of commercial fishing vessel imaginable are all moored together.

Dining in Prince Rupert

There are great sea food restaurants, as well as impressive fine dining establishments that overlook Prince Rupert’s beautiful harbour.

Comfortable Accomidations

There are many hotels, and motels, some with dramatic ocean views, as well as some very comfortable bed and breakfasts to stay in, while you fish Prince Rupert.
